Maine legislature takes action to reduce unwanted telemarketing calls
Maine Governor Janet Mills recently signed a bill into law requiring telephone solicitors to verify numbers against a reassigned numbers database to protect consumers from unwanted sales calls.
Wisconsin enacts stricter telemarketing regulations
Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers signed legislation amending current requirements around caller identification during telephone solicitations.
Utah passes first state law on AI regulation
Governor Spencer Cox signed the Utah Artificial Intelligence Policy Act (AIPA), set to become effective on May 1, 2024. This is the first state law on AI in the U.S. that comprehensively tackles both public and private sector AI products and services. Its primary objective is to safeguard consumers by subjecting generative AI to Utah’s consumer protection, healthcare, and financial services regulations.
EU parliament passes landmark AI regulation
The Act’s regulatory framework identifies 4 tiers of risk and related requirements for the development and operation of AI technologies, ensuring human oversight and data governance, and mandating technical documentation of AI systems for transparency and understanding.
Though the regulatory burden falls most heavily on “high risk” AI systems, any business that develops or deploys AI systems in the EU should familiarize themselves with the Act’s provisions.
FTC final rule introduces more recordkeeping requirements and extends coverage to B2B telemarketing calls
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced final updates to the Telemarketing Sales Rule (TSR), that extend telemarketing fraud protections to businesses and introduce new requirements for record keeping. Under the final rule telemarketers are required to maintain detailed records for every call.
