Maine Legislature Takes Action to Reduce Unwanted Telemarketing Calls
On March 25, 2024, Maine Governor Janet Mills signed into law LD 2234, which aims to promote better compliance practices and a more transparent telemarketing environment in the state.
Effective July 16, 2024, the law mandates that telephone solicitors must use the reassigned numbers database to check that the consumer's telephone number has not been reassigned prior to making a telephone sales call.
The bill defines the "reassigned numbers database" as the "database created and maintained by the Federal Communications Commission that identifies whether a telephone number has been reassigned.”
The legislation also includes a provision that exempts telephone solicitors from liability if they routinely use the database as part of their business practice.
